2017 High School Writing Competition

The Foundation for Letters is excited to announce our annual Fall Student Writing Competition!

Students are invited to submit one (1) original piece of poetry or prose for consideration. Submissions will be judged based on the following criteria: (1) organization, (2) originality of ideas, (3) use of conventions, (4) word choice, and (5) style and voice. This competition is open to all 9th – 12 graders in New York City. Finalists in each category will be honored guests at the FFL Fall Gala on Thursday, October 26th, 2017, where first-, second-, and third-place winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded.

Submissions will be accepted until

Wednesday, October 4, 2017 @5pm EST

 

Poetry submission instructions:  All submissions must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Written in or translated into English
  • A maximum of 750 words or 50 lines, no minimum
  • Font: any font, 12pt, black
  • Single line spaced, except between stanzas
  • If uploaded, Save as a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx). We also accept pdf files
  • The title must be in the file name (typed exactly the same as on the document)
  • If the poem is untitled, save the document with the first line of the poem instead

Prose Submission Instructions:  All submissions must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Written in or translated into English
  • A maximum of 5,000 words, no minimum
  • Font: any font, 12pt, black
  • Double line spaced (ie: a blank line space between each line)
  • If uploaded, Save as a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx). We also accept pdf files
  • The title must be in the file name (typed exactly the same as on the document)
  • If the piece is untitled, save the document with the first line of the piece instead
