Foundation for Letters Writing Fellowship
The Foundation for Letters’ Writing Fellowship Program provides talented NYC high school students with a one-year writing-intensive fellowship that includes a summer internship at FFL, free access to FFL’s writing programs, preparation for the college application process, and mentorship, social, and professional networking opportunities.
Over the course of the fellowship year, Fellows also serve as FFL ambassadors to their schools, helping with outreach to faculty, students, and staff, and connecting their classmates with FFL programs and resources.
CLASS OF 2019 FELLOWS
Jomaily Mendoza. Jomaily is a rising senior at the Bronx Center for Science & Mathematics.
Robyn Rodriguez. Robyn is a rising senior at the Knowledge and Power Preparatory Academy.
CLASS OF 2018 FELLOWS
Grace Vila. A rising junior at Mathers High school and will be graduating with the class of 2019. She was born and raised on Ellison Ave in the Bronx. Some of her hobbies include playing music with her band. Amongst all of her accomplishments, one is being able to be a Fellows intern for FFL. Grace wanted to be an intern for the Foundation For Letters because she adores what this organization is working towards; increasing student engagement with writing intrigues her tremendously and she would like to offer her skills and help in anyway that she can this summer. A fun fact about Grace is that her hair magically changes colors.
Laisha Frias. Currently attends KAPPA International High School and is a rising junior. She spent almost half of her life in the Dominican Republic and the rest in the Bronx. Some of her hobbies include reading, writing, listening to music, and doing math. Amongst her many accomplishments, she received a vice principal’s trophy in the 5th grade, wrote for a teen magazine in the summer and is joining debate club. Laisha wanted to be a Fellows intern for FFL because she grew up in the projects where there weren’t that many opportunities handed to her so she saw this as a way to extend her writing horizon and expand her knowledge. A fun fact about Laisha is that she can twitch her eye, read a book in a day, and can hula hoop for quite a long time.
Angel Rodriguez. Attends the Bronx Engineering and Technology Academy and is a rising senior. He was born and raised in the Bronx. Some of his hobbies include lifting, reading, playing video games and procrastinating. One of his many accomplishments include participating in the Fall 2016 National Youth Leadership Forum: National Security- Diplomacy, Intelligence & Defense for Envision. Angel wanted to be a Fellows intern for FFL because this internship will keep his mind refreshed throughout the two months off of school. A fun fact about Angel is that he has the ability to eat potatoes
Kelly Yoo. Currently attends Urban Assembly Maker Academy and is a rising senior. She was born and raised in California. Some of her hobbies include playing tennis, dancing, skateboarding, and playing guitar. One of her many accomplishments include being on the freshman varsity team for tennis in California and participating in dance competitions. Kelly wanted to be a Fellows intern for FFL because this internship will help add to her already growing college resume. A fun fact about Kelly is that the vein on her right hand that forms a heart.
Jordan Hennix. Currently attends the Urban Assembly Media High School and is a rising senior. He was born in the Bronx and raised in Manhattan. Some of his hobbies include writing and being on track. One of his many accomplishments include him being ranked among the top 5 students in his school for highest GPA. Jordan wanted to be a Fellows intern for FFL because this internship allowed him to broaden his knowledge in literacy while accompanied by others during his summer vacation. A fun fact about Jordan is that he has black magic, however he can’t control it.
Antavion Reid. Currently attends the Urban Assembly Maker Academy and is a rising sophomore. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Some of his hobbies include drawing, playing games, playing the piano, and writing. One of his many accomplishments was being able to take a college course class as a freshman in high school. Antavion wanted be a Fellows intern for FFL because he is inspired to be freelance writer and this internship would give him the knowledge and experience needed in order fulfill his dream. A fun fact about Antavion is that he will beat you in any game like a boss.
Jason Ye. Currently attends the Urban Assembly Maker Academy and is a rising senior. He was born in Rochester and raised in China until he was brought back to the U.S. Some of Jason’s many hobbies include reading and playing video games. One of his many accomplishments include winning a medal in track and field. Jason wanted to be a Fellows intern for FFL because he believes that writing can cause people to be able to discover more about themselves, most importantly, it allows for people to express their emotions and desires in a way that can inspire or move others. A fun fact about Jason is that he’s actually Iron Man.

Some of her hobbies include reading, writing, using her phone, and eating. One of her many accomplishments include being able to have a lead role in a school musical. She wanted to be a Fellows intern for FFL because she saw this as an opportunity to pick up new literacy skills to pass on to fellow scholars at her school. Some fun facts about Jomaily are that she hopes to attend West Point the USMA and that she can wiggle her ears
CLASS OF 2017 FELLOWS
Jeffrey Richiez. Graduated from the Urban Assembly Gateway School for Technology in 2017 and will enroll at SUNY New Paltz in August. He was born and raised in Manhattan, NY. Some of his hobbies include coding, gaming, swimming and biking. Amongst his accomplishments are that he got into SUNY New Paltz and created an app for his school. Jeffrey wanted to be an intern for the Foundation For Letters because he wanted to support this organization with his programming skills. Jeffrey hopes to start his own business one day. A fun fact about him is that he has a tendency to look mad even when he isn’t.
Valeria Perez. Graduated from the Expeditionary Learning School for Community Leaders in 2017 and will enroll at SUNY New Paltz in August. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Some of her hobbies include reading, outdoor adventures, and learning. One of her accomplishments involve receiving a scholarship giving her the ability to attend a ten day wilderness course to Nebraska. Valeria wanted to be an intern for the Foundation For Letters because she believes that the work she will do will make her feel more passionate about helping other individuals who aren’t as privileged. Some of Valeria’s fun facts are that she often refers to herself as Val, and that she strongly believes that the future is female.
Janin Goodwin. Graduated from the Urban Assembly Gateway School for Technology in 2017 and will enroll at City Tech in August. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Some of his hobbies include reading, writing, playing chess, and basketball. Amongst all of his accomplishments, one includes winning a medal in a middle school chess tournament when he was only in the fourth grade. Janin wanted to be a Foundation For Letters intern because of its focus on the betterment of the youth’s creative pursuits and its dedication to bringing literature to those with less opportunities. A fun fact about Janin is that he goes by the name of Jay and was born in outer space.
